Each class will run about 20 minutes with the opportunity for questions and answers. Click on the links below to learn more about a particular class or to pre-register. We encourage to you to pre-register so that we will know how many people to expect. May/June 2004 May 1: Planning and Planting a Container Garden May 8: Attracting Butterflies to Your Garden May 15: Planting Bird Friendly Habitats May 22: Herbs on Your Patio May 29: Cooking with Fresh Herbs June 12: Weeding and Watering June 19: Garden Art June 26: Create a Water Feature Planning and Planting a Container Garden This class will introduce you to the joys of container gardening. We will demonstrate the best way to plant a pot and discuss the types and kinds of plants to use. We will also cover some common problems with container gardening, pot sources, and provide you with a printed handout on container gardening. This is a good class for a beginning gardener, or an apartment dweller or single person who just wants a small garden. Register for Planning and Planting a Container Garden Attracting Butterflies to Your Garden Designed for gardeners of any experience this class will cover the plants and habitat needed to attract butterflies. We will show you what the various stages of butterfly life look like and discuss the needs of immature and adult butterflies. The handout for this class will include a list of butterfly friendly plants as well as tips on attracting these beautiful insects! Register for Attracting Butterflies to Your Garden Planting Bird Friendly Habitats This class will continue our theme of "Nature in the Garden" by discussing the needs of birds. We will provide examples of bird friendly plants and discuss some of the common garden chemicals that can harm them. We will also look at way to discourage squirrels from your feeders and manage your bird population. The handout will include a list of resources for feeding birds and environmentally safe lawn and garden products as well as information and tips for keeping birds returning to your garden year after year! Register for Planting Bird Friendly Habitats Herbs on Your Patio Every cook knows the difference that fresh herbs can make to your favorite recipes! This class will cover 10 herbs that are easy to grow in containers, highlighting such favorites as Basil, Cilantro and Dill. We will also talk about some of the more unusual herbs that have recently become trendy. As with all of our gardening classes we will also provide troubleshooting information. The handout for this class will include a list of resources, as well as ideas for growing and using herbs. Register for Herbs on Your Patio Cooking With Fresh Herbs Whether you grow your own or purchase your herbs at the market, there are tricks to using fresh herbs effectively. This class will include demonstrations of cooking techniques, samples of herb dishes and information on preserving fresh herbs. We will focus on the 10 basic herbs from the Herbs on Your Patio class and touch on some others as well. The handout will include cooking and preserving information as well as sample recipes from Cooking From Your Patio. Register for Cooking With Fresh Herbs Wedding and Watering This class will include information on how to identify and control common weeds.I will discuss pre-emptive weed control as well as reclaiming overridden beds. I will also provide information on effective watering techniques and water conservation. The handout will include the names and charecteristics of some common weeds as well as infomration on drought resistant plants Register for Watering and Weeding Garden Art One of the best ways to make your garden a part of your living space is to include "garden art" that brings your interior decorating into the outdoors. This is a demonastration class that will include; using "found objects" as art, decorating pots, and vertical garden art. The handout will include sources for garden art as well as a list of places to see examples. Register for Garden Art Create a Water Feature Water features are an important part of any garden, but can add a special sense to the southern garden. The sound of trickling water can give a sense of coolness even on a hot summer's day and can add a touch of whimsy that plants alone can't supply. This class will give you the information necessary to build a simple water feature. The handout will include resources for water feature supplies and tips for building and maintaining a water feature. Register for Create a Water Feature |
